Join our team of Head Start therapists!

Thank you for considering to join our network of accredited-private therapists. We are currently welcoming new therapist applications from all areas of the UK who offer evidence-based talking therapies to assist us with delivering treatments within a 15 mile radius of our clients’ homes. If you offer an evidence-based talking therapy approach and are an accredited member of the BACP, or registered with BABCP/EMDR UK & Ireland, or a member of BPS and HCPC then you’re eligible to sign up to our nationwide network of accredited private psychotherapists and counsellors.

If you would like to join our team of therapists, please click here for our Therapist Application Form. (Some information is required for governance assurances.) (Please also note that Google Chrome is the most optimal browser to complete this form.)

The majority of wounded Armed Forces men and women are former front line troops, aged 18-25 years old, some already disadvantaged in education or home background. There is evidence that reveals common mental disorders and alcohol misuse are more prevalent in the ex-service population, despite popular belief that PTSD is the main issue. The ex-service personnel we support have varying needs from double amputees or burns victims who are trying to rebuild their lives.

Head Start accepts referrals from healthcare professionals. On referral we look for an assessment to have been completed and statutory support to have been explored. However where the NHS are unable to deliver support e.g. long waiting lists, Head Start can fund up to 12 sessions of private therapy.

Our key role within the process is to provide the client with guidance and support to increase their engagement with therapy. Therefore the Head Start team keep in contact with both clients and therapists to be informed on levels of engagement. We ask that therapists administer patient recorded outcome measures (PROMs) including GAD-7, PHQ-9, PCL-C, AUDIT, and WSAS, and return the total scores to Head Start at the beginning, middle and end of therapy.

Once the referral has been sent to the selected therapist, based on appropriate therapeutic modality and proximity to the client’s home Head Start will ask for confirmation of the first session date, PROMs and monthly invoices itemising session dates. Where scheduled sessions are not attended by the client or cancelled with late notice, it is requested that Head Start are informed as soon as possible.

Throughout the course of therapy, Head Start is able to offer support to therapists relating to sensitivities of military culture and clinical guidance. A guide to working with ex-service personnel and common military abbreviations can be found at the end of this page.

On the discharge of a client, their GP is informed of the support provided. Therefore a concise summary of the therapist’s interventions, observations and recommendations is necessary.
